If you have a solid check engine light, this means that you should prioritize taking your car to the mechanic. However, if the check engine light is flashing in yellow or red, this means you immediately need to take your car in for auto services. The mechanic will plug a machine into your car, which will then reveal the exact problem that you're having.

Another warning sign that you may need auto services is if your car is smoking excessively, which can often be accompanied by the smell of something burning. This may be a normal reaction to water vapor coming into contact with the exhaust if the weather is cold and humid.
